Vodka sales are set to outstrip whisky as a new generation of young Britons turn their backs on traditional alcoholic drinks and increasingly enjoy white spirits, a new report shows.
The study by the independent market analyst Datamonitor says vodka sales in the UK are likely to grow by 21 per cent over the next four years, to top £3.8 billion. But whisky sales are forecast to grow by just 5 per cent over the same period to reach £3.9 billion.
Vodka overtook Scotch whisky, which accounts for 70 per cent of total whisky sales, in value terms in 2003.
Datamonitor says vodka has continued to attract a younger audience than dark spirits.
