There was a craze a
few years ago in microbrewery circles involving the aging of imperial
stouts in bourbon barrels. Some were very good. But, as will likely
happen with the current trend of “imperial India pale ales” and
“imperial pilsners,” it soon ran its course. Examples do still exist,
but not on a national scale.
In the aftermath, however, some seeds were planted for other interesting beers.
Rocky’s
Revenge is a brown ale that is also aged in bourbon barrels, and for
those who might find 10- or 12-percent stouts a bit too much, it offers
the bourbon taste with a lighter ale.
Now, I’m not a huge
bourbon fan. Once I discovered that single-malt Irish and Scottish
whiskies, such as Redbreast, Knappogue Castle, Connemara, Lagavulin,
Dalwhinnie and others tasted better, were not as sweet and still put
hair on my chest, I did not look back. Just like my beer, I prefer
barley to corn.
