Vodka, whiskey drive liquor sales | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Liquor sales in the U.S. climbed 6.3 percent last year to $17 billion, the largest gain in two years, on increased demand for super-premium vodka and whiskey, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States said.

Vodka rose 11 percent to $4 billion, led by Sweden's Absolut. Whiskeys such as Brown-Forman Corp.'s Jack Daniels and Fortune Brands Inc.'s Jim Beam increased 4.6 percent to $5 billion, the group said Monday in its annual industry review.

Super-premium spirits such as Grey Goose vodka and Patron tequila rose 17.5 percent, triple the gains posted by lower-priced brands.

Spirits made up 32.8 percent of alcohol spending last year, up from 28.7 percent in 2000, the group said. Beer's market share dipped to 50.7 percent last year, from 55.5 percent in 2000. Wine's market share gained about 1 percentage point to 16.6 percent.
